Double Nines - free online backgammon and a daily puzzle
Double Nines is a backgammon table in the browser. It is free, with no ads and no account. You sit down as Anna, or choose another face. The Dragon across the table can play a gentle game, a club game, or a longer-looking game, and you can change that while you play. There is a daily puzzle, a friend on the same screen, American Acey-Deucey, and Monte Carlo world championship finals you can pause and step through. The checkers and the room can change during a game. A hop can be taken back while the dice are still out. The reading page is at playd9.com/wiki/index.html. How to play, for a first game, is at playd9.com/wiki/how-to-play.html. The game is at playd9.com.
Checkers, and the room
The checkers can be flowers, a classic disc, birds, a jack-o'-lantern, a retro Halloween set, or dogs. Swap them while a game is going. Double-click a checker to hear its story. The room can be marble, a cyberpunk cafe, a horror poster, Halloween, or open space, and that can change during the game too.
Daily puzzle
Each day offers one real position and one roll. There is more than one legal way to play it. Ask for a hint, or look at the suggested line. After you play, a coach tells you whether you found that line. You can play the position out.
Historical Matches
These are public Monte Carlo world championship finals, played to 25 points with the doubling cube. You can pause and walk one hop at a time. The finals are 1981 Dwek against Genud (Genud won 25-19), 1987 Grandell against Robertie (Robertie won 25-17), 1994 Frigo against Thomsen (Frigo won 25-17), 1998 Meyburg against Winslow (Meyburg won 25-20), 2000 Scalamandre against Holm (Scalamandre won 25-20), 2001 Granstedt against Holm (Granstedt won 26-16), 2002 Ziva against Andersen (Andersen won 25-23), 2003 Tissona against Royset (Royset won 26-20), 2006 Villa against Vischjager (Vischjager won 25-23), 2010 Malas against Bentzon (Bentzon won 27-9), and 2011 Suzuki against Gullotta (Suzuki won 27-6). Three short classic plays are there too: an opening 6-1, an opening 6-6, and a blot hit. Five more public games are Match notes. They are written up, not stepped through.
Two players, and Acey-Deucey
A friend can sit at the same screen. Each of you moves only on your own turn. American Acey-Deucey is here too: all fifteen checkers start off the board, and a roll of 1-2 lets you name doubles.
Money, a match, and the cube
A money game is one game. A match plays to a length you choose. The doubling cube is part of both. A gammon and a backgammon change what the game is worth. You can double before you roll. Turn the automatic roll off when you want that quiet moment.
